I had been given a tip off about a secret spot near Bigbury that works well
in a Southerly so I thought that I would explore it today. It is a river
mouth that you launch from a beach about 500m downwind so it's a test of
tacking skills to get to the waves and requires a certain amount of guess
work as to which sail size you need. To add to the fun there is no wind at
the launch point. Sorry, but I've been sworn to secrecy as to the location
as parking is of a premium and the water would get very crowded.
There were 6 sailors out already but they were too far to see what size
sail they were using so I opted for a 4.7 with my floaty (85l) wave board -
a wise choice.
Tacked up to the waves which you hit cross on port tack jumping. It is a
briliant location in a Southerly as the wind funnels up the river and the
waves are nice and spaced with acres of flat water between the ramps. Had
a whale of a time with some massive port tack jumps with screaming lay down
gybes at either end. Tried a few push tacks but was messing the carve back
into wind after the rig/body twist, but the water was only waist deep when
I fell in!!
An absolutely perfect day compared to the life threatening conditions you
get at Bigbury in a Southerly (dead on shore with lots of walls of white
water).
